Birthplace
Miguel Hernandez Gilabert’s universal literary legacy is well known to poetry experts and lovers. Every corner, street, palm tree and Saint Michael’s hill, every place where Miguel walked along, studied, where he fell in love with his wife or even where he was imprisoned, are still preserved in the city where he was born and raised. Orihuela has remained passionate about the poet throughout its spaces, its atmosphere and its people.
Our route starts in a humble although universal dwelling where the first years of the poet’s life took place, the birthplace located near Saint John’s church.
Miguel Hernandez Home Museum
During a visit to the Home Museum, it is easy to imagine the way he lived, slept and even the place where he wrote his first poems. A place where he moved in with his family where the interiors remain the same as when Miguel Hernandez was last here. Once there, it is a must to see and get a picture done under the fig tree where the poet usually sought his inspiration. Furthermore, on the last Saturday of each month, this spot becomes the centre of a literary gathering.
(Opening times for the Home Museum: Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 2 pm and from 4 to 7pm. Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10am to 2pm).
Exhibition Room
Adjoining the Home Museum, it has become the venue for artistic and literary gatherings.
(Opening Times: Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 2 pm and from 4 to 7pm.
Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10am to 2pm).
Miguel Hernandez Foundation
Another unavoidable visit for poetry fans is Miguel Hernandez Foundation, an association created to recognise and investigate his legacy, as well as to disseminate it around the world. (Opening Times: Tuesdays to Saturdays from xx to xx and from xx to xx. Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10am to 2pm).

Saint Dominic School
A reference within the city, this is also the place where the poet’s interest in the cultural world began to arise, and where he would meet Ramon Sije, one of his most faithful friends.
Saint Michael’s hill and the surroundings of the Cathedral were often frequented by the poet during his youth. Today it is still possible to feel his trail thanks to the city’s efforts in maintaining this legacy.
Time:2 hours and a half.
Suggestions: We recommend using a vehicle for the last part of the route.
